Everything has come together in this image – all the contradictions, all the frustrations and all the hopelessness of what it is to be a young Syrian man in a refugee camp. He is young, and his shirt indicates that he wants to fight, but the flag behind him indicates only vaguely and for what. His eyes are closed not because he doesn’t want to see me, but because he wants to tell me that nobody sees him. His mouth is covered because nobody hears him, but also because he dares not speak. He cannot be sure who is listening.
